ErasureLog Overview
ErasureLog is a cloud-based application for recording the erasure and destruction of data-bearing media and devices. It provides organisations with a complete, auditable record of every item processed, the ability to group records into jobs, chain of custody tracking, and certificate generation.
What ErasureLog is used for
- Recording the erasure or destruction of hard drives, SSDs, tapes, mobile phones, and other media.
- Grouping records into jobs for batch processing.
- Managing client information linked to jobs or individual records.
- Tracking the movement of devices through chain of custody transfers.
- Generating Record Certificates and Job Certificates as evidence of destruction.
Core concepts
| Concept | Description |
|---|---|
| Erasure/Destruction Record | One record for one device. Contains the method used, media details, and outcome. |
| Job | A grouping of records. Useful for batch processing or client work. |
| Client | The owner or previous owner of the media. Can be linked to a Job or a standalone Record. |
| Chain of Custody Transfer | A record of device handover or movement. Linked to a Job. Can include many devices. |
| Record Certificate | A certificate covering one Record and one device. |
| Job Certificate | A certificate covering all Records linked to a specific Job. |
How the system fits together
- Create a Record — log the erasure or destruction of a single device. You can link it to a Job and/or Client, or leave it as a standalone Record.
- Group Records into Jobs — if you are processing a batch of devices for a client, create a Job and link your Records to it.
- Track chain of custody — use Chain of Custody Transfers to record when devices are collected, moved, or handed over.
- Generate certificates — produce a Record Certificate for individual devices, or a Job Certificate for all devices in a Job.
tip
Records can exist independently of a Job. A standalone Record is useful for one-off destruction events or items that do not belong to a client batch.
